Mértola and the Guadiana River

Mértola is a village in the southeast of Portugal, on the banks of the Guadiana River, close to the Spanish border.

Mértola was inhabited by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Arabs. With its rich natural resources, its economy became one of the most important commercial trading hubs of the western part of the Mediterranean region for seven millennia.
